Colorado Flute Choirs
Flute Salad rehearses in Thornton, Colorado and consists of three people. They are not currently looking for new members, but are available for a variety of performances. Flute Salad provides music for weddings, holiday events, retail events,senior communities, private parties, memorials, grand openings, and more. They can provide background music, be featured musicians for a seated audience, or a combination of the two. Flute Salad features an extensive repertoire of classical, standards, traditional/folk, Christmas/holiday,Irish/Scottish,and swing music. They have a large repertoire including Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy, Amazing Grace, Ave Maria, and the Faure Pavane.
In Longmont, the Longs Peak Flute Ensemble is led by Kay W. Lloyd kaylloyd1463@comcast.net 303.651.2499. The age range of those presently in the choir is 16-60+. They perform at church services, combined flute choir and handbell concerts, community events and conferences. They average five performances a year. There is no fee to belong to the group that averages 15 people. Rehearsals are usually held on Sundays from 3:30-5:00. Auditions are open to everyone. If you are interested, prepare two pieces of contrasting style (technical and expressive) which best displays your level of playing. Be prepared to play a duet - either sightreading or of your choice - to demonstrate tuning and ensemble playing. It is recommended that you 'sit in' a rehearsal to see if you are comfortable with the level of music being performed. Three pieces from a typical program are Spring from Vivaldi's Four Seasons,Pictures at an Exhibition and Flutes and Vegetables by Cohen.
The Metro State Flute Ensemble is open to all Auraria campus and community flutists. Directed by Metro State flute instructor, Nancy Andrew, the group meets Wednesday nights, 7-8:50 in the Arts Building on the Auraria campus, near downtown Denver. There is no audition required, but Nancy asks that all members play at the high school level or above. The concert at the end of this semester will be on Monday, December 5. Cost is $75/semester for Auraria students and $125 for community members. Sign-up is through Auraria Campus Recreation. Come enjoy making music with other flutists! Rehearsals are held in Colorado Springs and ages 16 through 80 are currently represented in the choir. There are an average of six performances a year primarily in churches with three or four holiday performances in December at senior centers. They also play for weddings. There is an average number of 40 members in the main group, with a smaller group by audition only of 12 people. Rehearsals are usually held on Tuesdays, the small group at 6:45 pm, the large group 7:30 - 9:00 pm. All small group members also play in the large group. There is a $50 fee to belong to the choir. There is no specific audition, just show up and play with large group. Be able to play at the level of the Rubank Advanced book. Small group audition usually consists of rehearsing with the group and members decide if auditionee can handle the music. Upcoming performances include a commission for handbells and flute choir, Malaguena, arrangements of some Lady Gaga tunes, and original pieces by member Akio Lis and by Phyllis Louke.
The Rocky Mountain Flute Choir rehearses in Englewood on Monday’s from 7 to 8:30 PM. Shawana Quirk at Fluterquirk@comcast.net or Leona Losinski at leona.flute@gmail.com are the people to contact about this group. The RMFC performs at church services, weddings, and other community events. They have 2 formal performances a year and 1 recital with an average 8 performances a year. There is a charge of $25 per semester to play. The age range of the groups members is 25 to 65 and there is an average of 22 members. To audition, prepare an etude or short excerpt of your choice. Make sure the piece contains a variety of tempos and styles. Typical pieces from a recent program are - Anime et Tres Decide by Debussy, Theme from Batman, and Wind Dance by Todd Coleman.
The Sherwood Park Flute Ensemble meets in Greeley and is directed by Bonnie Jean Hoffman. 970-351-0710 bjhoffman6@comcast.net The choir is made up of adults, but advanced high school students are also welcome. They perform both concerts and background music for civic events, weddings, and banquets. They average three performances a year. An audition is required to join and Bonnie prefers to hear an etude but any piece that displays proficiency will do. Be prepared to play some scales. The average number of members is 11 and they rehearse at 7 PM on Wednesdays. Three typical pieces from a recent program are Songs of the Ocean, Hirose/Pearce. Bumblebee Fantasy, arr. Pearce. The Western Colorado Flute Choir rehearses in Grand Junction at 7:00 PM on Mondays at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church. They present an average of three concerts a year, including recitals in a recital hall for a sitting audience, and occasionally for churches and nursing homes.
